IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The maps illustrate the transformation of Beechwood Farm from 1950 to the present day.
Overall, the site has undergone significant development, evolving from a traditional agricultural operation into a diversified farm that combines agriculture with tourism and recreational facilities. While the core farming areas have been preserved, numerous modern amenities have been added to accommodate visitors.
Regarding the agricultural sections that remained largely intact, the central farming areas, including fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables, maintained their original positions in the western part of the site. The farmhouse, barn, and chicken area also retained their locations in the southeastern section, though the barn appears to have been relocated slightly closer to the farmhouse. Additionally, the rivers continued to flow along the same paths, providing natural boundaries for the property.
As for the new tourism-oriented developments, the most striking addition was the introduction of a camping field in the northeastern area, complete with tents and trees, where sheep grazing had previously taken place. Furthermore, holiday cottages were constructed adjacent to the farmhouse and barn, creating accommodation facilities for visitors. The farm also added modern infrastructure including solar panels in the eastern section, a farm shop near the road intersection, and two designated parking areas - one near the camping field and another close to the holiday cottages to facilitate tourist access.
