IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The maps illustrate the transformation of Beechwood Farm from 1950 to the present day.

Overall, the farm has changed significantly, developing from a traditional farm into a place that combines farming with tourism. However, the main farming areas and natural features have remained in their original locations.

The central farming areas, including fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables, have remained in the western part of the farm. The farmhouse, barn, and chicken area are still in the southeast, although the barn has been moved slightly closer to the farmhouse. The rivers have also kept their original routes.

Several new facilities have been added for visitors. A camping field with tents and trees has been built in the northeast, replacing the sheep-grazing area. Holiday cottages have also been constructed near the farmhouse and barn. In addition, solar panels were installed in the east, while a farm shop was added near the road intersection. Two parking areas were also created for visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have provided a clear and accurate summary of the main features of the farm's transformation. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the introduction of tourism-related facilities like the camping field, holiday cottages, and the farm shop, while noting the stability of the natural features and core farming areas. The overview is concise and effectively captures the essence of the development. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more specific comparisons where possible, such as noting the exact shift in the barn's position or the specific reduction in the size of the original farming area to accommodate the new structures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. You use clear paragraphing to separate the overview from the specific details of the farm's layout. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'However,' and 'although' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The information flows smoothly from the general changes to specific additions. The structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and changes, such as 'transformation,' 'combined,' 'original locations,' and 'constructed.' The word choices are precise and contribute to a professional tone. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or descriptive adjectives to highlight the scale of the changes, such as 'dramatic expansion' or 'strategic placement.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is accurate and shows a good control of sentence structures. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The central farming areas... have remained in the western part of the farm' and 'A camping field... has been built in the northeast, replacing the sheep-grazing area.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over passive voice constructions is particularly appropriate for this type of task.
