Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrate the transformation of Beechwood farm for the public between 1950 and the present scenario. The sheep area has now been converted into multiple sites.

Overall, the track are now converted into roads and the barn is redeveloped into holidays cottages for visitors, whereas barn is shifted from holiday cottages to triangle shape road towards the river.

Firstly, the river, fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse and chickens places show no change but there is an addition of farm shop in fruit trees to sell fruits and beside on the other side of road there is now availability of parking to park vehicles. However, Four solar panels were installed in the north-east corner for generating electricity and end of the triangle road there is another parking also available for vehicles. Moreover, In the center of sheep land, there is a camping field was created for camping and one tree was planted for view.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the conversion of the sheep area and the addition of new facilities. However, the description of the changes is sometimes confusing or inaccurate, particularly regarding the location of the barn and the road layout. The summary of 'no change' items is helpful, but the overall reporting lacks the precision required for a higher band. Some features, such as the specific location of the new parking, are described in a way that is difficult to follow, which hinders the clarity of the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hampered by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. For example, the sentence 'whereas barn is shifted from holiday cottages to triangle shape road' is confusing and does not clearly convey the spatial changes. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes applied mechanically or incorrectly, such as the transition 'Moreover, In the center of sheep land, there is a camping field was created'. The flow between sentences is often disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety needed for a higher score. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'road', 'parking', and 'area'. Some word choices are unnatural, such as 'present scenario' instead of 'the present day' or 'chickens places' instead of 'chicken sheds'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of sophisticated or precise terminology limits the range of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('the track are'), missing articles ('in fruit trees'), and incorrect verb forms ('there is a camping field was created'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary capitalisation in the middle of sentences. These errors are noticeable and occasionally cause the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede communication.
