Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While the main features of the farm's transformation are identified, the analysis is superficial. The overview is vague, using phrases like 'many thing added', which lacks the precision required for a Band 6 or higher. The comparison between 1950 and the present is attempted, but the lack of detail regarding the scale of changes and the failure to reach the word count limit mean the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into short paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices. While there is an attempt to use transition words like 'To commence with' and 'Furthermore', these are often used incorrectly or sound unnatural. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'many things and facilities added', which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial progression of the changes. Paragraphing is present but the ideas within them are not well-linked.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'thing', 'place', and 'built'. There are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'compression of a beechwood farm' (likely meaning 'development' or 'transformation') and 'attached a barn on south side'. The lack of precise vocabulary to describe geographical changes or facility types limits the score. To improve, the student needs to use more specific terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'converted', 'extended', 'demolished', or 'relocated'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('It show the more developed farm'), missing articles ('in North East side'), and incorrect verb forms ('plant the new tree'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. The high frequency of errors across basic sentence structures prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
