IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two plans demonstrate the information about the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today after development.
In 1950, there was a road in the west of Beechwood farm that was going towards north. There was a track connected to the road heading to the east of the farm. Along that there were sections divided for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables to right of the track. When heading toward to east on the same track there were a barn, a farmhouse and chickens. A river was flowing from northwest to south and then to the east. The sheep area was in the northeast of the farm.
Moving further, the track is converted into a road. A farm shop has been built in the fruit trees section whereas soft fruits and vegetables section remained the same. Now in the sheep area, two parking is constructed, one in the north and other in the east. In the middle of the sheep area camping fields and a tree is planted. While on the northeast side solar panels is installed. The barn is replaced with holiday cottages and the barn is connected to v-shaped road. The farmhouse, chickens, road from the west and a river remained unchanged.
Overall, the farm underwent significant development compared with several new facilities. The most notable changes were the addition of a farm shop, camping fields, parking space, holiday cottages and solar panels whereas other remained largely unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the two maps, providing a clear comparison between 1950 and the present day. You successfully identified the main developments, such as the conversion of the track into a road, the addition of the farm shop, camping fields, and solar panels. The overview is effective in summarizing the most significant changes. However, the description of the layout could be more precise; for example, stating 'the barn is connected to v-shaped road' is slightly confusing, and the spatial references (e.g., 'to right of the track') could be more formal. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs detailing the changes, and a summary overview. The progression of information is generally clear, moving from the 1950 layout to the current developments. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moving further' and 'whereas', which help link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly ambiguous, such as 'Along that there were sections'. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring clearer pronoun references would elevate the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'converted', 'remained unchanged', and 'significant development'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'two parking is constructed' (should be 'two parking areas') and 'solar panels is installed' (should be 'are installed'). While you successfully describe the map features, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language for spatial relationships and map-specific terminology, such as 'situated in the north-eastern quadrant' or 'the site has undergone a transformation'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'two parking is constructed', 'solar panels is installed') and article usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the barn is replaced with holiday cottages and the barn is connected to v-shaped road'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring that plural subjects match their verbs and refining the use of articles when describing specific map features.
