Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagrams illustrates the road map of a farm called Beechwood Farm of year 1950 and the same site today and shows the development happened within these year.

In the year 1950, the farm was too spacious with no facility where cultivation of fruits and vegetables was done. There is a river in the south side of the farm which covers the whole side of the farm and a bridge is constructed over the river on the north side. The connectivity between the farms was only a regular track which divides the area of agriculture land which includes fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, barn, farmhouse, chickens and were the sheep are kept.

After the development, in recent year the road is been developed in the place of regular track. In the result, the connectivity become fast and smooth and Farm shop is build in the fruits trees area which is beside the road. The Barn area is now converted to Holiday cottages and the barn is shifted near to chicken’s house also the road is connected to it. Two parking is allotted in the different side of the corner which is connected to the road were sheep was kept. The Solar panels is installed in the north side of the farm and camping field is created near the solar panels.

Overall, it seems that the farm was too spacious in the initial year with zero facility and now in the recent year the farm is developed with various facilities like Road, Parking, Solar panels, Camping fields and Holidays cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the addition of the road, holiday cottages, and solar panels. You have also made relevant comparisons between 1950 and the present day. However, the response lacks a clear 'overview' paragraph that synthesizes the most significant changes. While you have included an 'Overall' paragraph at the end, it functions more as a summary of details rather than a high-level overview of the major trends (e.g., the shift from purely agricultural use to a more diversified, tourism-oriented site). To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most striking changes immediately after the introduction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the past to the present. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, phrases like 'In the result' are used incorrectly to link ideas. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'the barn is shifted near to chicken’s house also the road is connected to it', where the pronoun usage makes the spatial relationship difficult to follow. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'spacious', 'cultivation', and 'converted'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'road map of a farm' (a farm plan is more appropriate) and 'too spacious with no facility'. Furthermore, there are minor errors in word formation, such as 'is been developed' instead of 'has been developed'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing map changes, such as 'replaced by', 'extended', or 'transformed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The diagrams illustrates', 'Two parking is allotted') and incorrect article usage. There are also errors in tense consistency, particularly when describing the past versus the present. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and ensuring consistent verb tenses when comparing two time periods.
