Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are two maps which show the site of a Beechwood farm in 1950 and the same site today. At the glance, there is significant use of technology in today's farm than compared to 1950's farm.

In today's map we can see that half of Sheep area is now converted into a camping field and other half is covered with solar panels. Back in 1950, farm was spacious and cosy. However, today's map shows that there are many changes in the map. Track is now converted into road and now this farm offers many facilities for visitors. Now, this farm has a holiday cottage, parking, farm shop, camping field with the efficient use of solar panels.

Overall, maps show the drastic change in a farm over years. Before farm was mainly focused on farming and grazing of animals. However, farm is now more inclined towards welcoming visitors. These maps show the melancholic remainder of changes occur over period of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, such as the transition from agricultural use to tourism-oriented facilities. However, the response lacks a clear overview of the scale of change. While you mention the 'drastic change', you could improve by explicitly noting the complete removal of certain features (like the original farm buildings) versus the addition of new ones. The description of the sheep area is accurate, but ensure you maintain a neutral, objective tone; words like 'cosy' and 'melancholic' are subjective and inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires a factual summary of visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 1950s to the present day. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Overall' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'In today's map', 'today's map', 'these maps'). To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the description of the sheep area and the new facilities is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'converted', 'facilities', and 'inclined towards'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'At the glance' should be 'At a glance', and 'remainder of changes' is an incorrect usage; 'remnant' or 'reflection' would be better, though 'reflection' is still slightly subjective. The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as missing articles ('Before farm was...', 'Track is now converted...') and awkward phrasing ('than compared to 1950's farm'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles and prepositions, and ensure that your sentence structures are grammatically sound.
