Student answer (Band 5.0)

The picture shows the map of Beechwood farm in1950 and the same site today. If we look at the 1950 map it was simpler then now. On the North side there were some space that was occupied for sheep. There were also a bridge that cross through the Beechwood farm river and a track was also linked with it. Farmer grown some kind of fruits and vegetable trees their. We also seen small sections of barn, farmhouse and chickens on the East side. Today map is more modern than the past. If we see todays map it become more developed and many things has been changed. They removed the sheep section and fix solar panels and parking their. Also built camping field. Now they built a new road instead of track. They changed the place of barn. They built holiday cottages near the road. This map shows that now people live is more easier than in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by describing the main features of the farm in 1950 and today. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the removal of the sheep area and the addition of solar panels and cottages, the description lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes. The final sentence, 'people live is more easier than in the past,' is an opinion rather than a summary of the visual data, which is not appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus on grouping features logically and providing a clear, objective summary of the overall transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into two main sections (past and present), which provides a basic structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is very limited and often repetitive (e.g., 'There were also...', 'Also built...', 'They...'). The transition between sentences is mechanical, and the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire response is written as two long blocks of text. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as an introduction, an overview, and detailed body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple verbs like 'built', 'changed', and 'removed'. There are also several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Farmer grown some kind of fruits' (should be 'The farmer grew fruit trees') and 'people live is more easier' (should be 'life is easier'). The range of vocabulary is limited to the most common terms, which prevents a more precise description of the map features. To improve, try to use more specific terminology related to maps and development, such as 'converted', 'replaced', 'expanded', or 'demolished'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'there were some space' (subject-verb agreement), 'a bridge that cross' (tense error), and 'Today map' (missing possessive 's'). You rely almost exclusively on simple sentence structures. While there is an attempt at a complex sentence ('If we look at...'), it is marred by grammatical inaccuracies. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct verb tenses for describing past and present states, and incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures with fewer errors.
