Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the two maps, identifying key changes such as the road development, the conversion of the sheep area, and the repurposing of the barn. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it describes the changes in general terms but lacks a clear summary of the most significant transformations. While the main features are reported, the description of the 'fruits trees, soft fruits and the vegetables' is slightly inaccurate as it implies they remained unchanged, whereas the map shows a shift in their layout. The response addresses the task requirements but could be improved by providing a more precise summary of the spatial changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'Moving towards', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'not only this they also'. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences is sometimes interrupted by grammatical errors. The overall progression is logical, but the use of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use topic-specific terms like 'reconstruct', 'cultivation', and 'multifarious'. However, there are several instances of incorrect word forms and awkward collocations, such as 'demolish of many building' (demolition of many buildings) and 'fruits trees' (fruit trees). Some phrasing is repetitive or imprecise, which limits the ability to convey information with precision. To improve, the student should focus on using correct word forms and more natural collocations related to describing maps and changes over time.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'at to different period' (at two different periods), 'they change the whole area by demolish' (they changed the whole area by demolishing), and 'the sheep area is develop' (the sheep area was developed). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are problematic, particularly when describing past changes. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
