IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given map illustrates the current layout of a Beechwood farm and of 1950.
Overall, the farm went substantial development with sheep farms being replaced by camping field and solar panels. Southern part of the road remained almost unaltered with few addition and modification.
In 19050, Sheep farm was located in the north of the farm which is replaced by camping field and solar panels now. The whole site is now filled with camping tents, solar panels, and some trees. One parking lot is allocated toward the main road in the north-west part of the map and other towards the east of the farm facing to the road
Another thing worth noticing is that fruits trees farm has additional farm shop and barn on eastern side is converted into holiday cottages now. Soft fruits and vegetables farm remained same as it was in 1950. The barn has been moved to the sharp junction of the road. The farmhouse and chickens farming sites did not undergo any changes since 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the replacement of the sheep farm with camping and solar panels. However, the overview is slightly underdeveloped and contains a factual error regarding the date (19050). While the main trends are reported, the comparison between the two time periods could be more precise. The description of the layout is generally clear, but some details, such as the specific locations of the new parking lots, could be integrated more smoothly to provide a more comprehensive summary of the site's transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific changes. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In 19050' and 'Another thing worth noticing', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the general overview to specific site changes. However, the referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the paragraphing could be more effectively used to group related changes, such as separating the northern developments from the eastern ones more distinctly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'unaltered', 'allocated', and 'converted'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'farm went substantial development' (should be 'underwent') and 'fruits trees farm' (should be 'fruit tree area'). The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the lack of precision and occasional errors in collocation prevent a higher score. The student relies on basic descriptive language rather than more sophisticated terminology related to map interpretation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in north of the farm'), incorrect verb tenses ('is replaced' instead of 'was replaced'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency. The student attempts to use passive voice, which is appropriate for this task, but the execution is inconsistent. More attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve the accuracy significantly.
