Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given map illustrates the current layout of a Beechwood farm and of 1950.

Overall, the farm went substantial development with the sheep farm being replaced by camping field and solar panels. The Southern part of the road remained almost unaltered with few addition and modification.

In 1950, The Sheep farm was located in the north of the farm which is replaced by camping field and solar panels now. The whole site is now filled with camping tents, solar panels, and some trees. One parking lot is allocated toward the main road in the north-west part of the map and other towards the east of the farm facing to the road.

Another thing worth noticing is that fruits trees farm has additional farm shop and barn on eastern side is converted into holiday cottages now. Soft fruits and vegetables farm remained same as it was in 1950. The barn has been moved to the sharp junction of the road. The farmhouse and chickens farming sites did not undergo any changes since 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the replacement of the sheep farm with camping and solar facilities and the conversion of the barn into cottages. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the maps. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview is more comprehensive; for instance, you could mention that while some areas changed significantly, the farmhouse and vegetable farm remained unchanged. Your comparisons are generally accurate, though ensure that the spatial descriptions (e.g., 'north-west part') are consistently precise to avoid any ambiguity for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the site's development. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall,' 'In 1950,' and 'Another thing worth noticing,' which help guide the reader through the information. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., ensuring it is always clear what 'the road' or 'the farm' refers to in each context) would further enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'unaltered,' 'allocated,' and 'converted.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'fruits trees farm' (should be 'fruit tree orchard') and 'sheep farm being replaced by camping field' (should be 'a camping site'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Attempting to use more specific collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated,' 'adjacent to,' or 'underwent significant transformation,' would strengthen your lexical profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the farm went substantial development' (should be 'underwent'), 'few addition and modification' (should be 'few additions and modifications'), and 'fruits trees farm' (should be 'fruit tree farm'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage, such as 'in the north of the farm' versus 'in the north of the site.' While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization.
