IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given map illustrates the current layout of a Beechwood farm and that of 1950.
Overall, the farm underwent substantial development with the sheep farm being replaced by a camping field and solar panels. The Southern part of the road remained almost unaltered with few additions and modifications.
In 1950, the Sheep farm was located in the north of the farm which is replaced by a camping field and solar panels now. The whole site is now filled with camping tents, solar panels, and some trees. One parking lot is allocated toward the main road in the north-west part of the map and other towards the east of the farm facing to the road.
Another thing worth noticing is that the fruits trees farm has an additional farm shop and the barn on eastern side is converted into holiday cottages now. Soft fruits and vegetables farm remained same as it was in 1950. The barn has been moved to the sharp junction of the road. The farmhouse and chickens farming sites did not undergo any changes since 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the maps, including the major changes such as the replacement of the sheep farm and the conversion of the barn. The overview clearly highlights the most significant developments. However, the description of the parking lots is slightly confusing, as the text mentions one in the north-west and another in the east, which does not align perfectly with the visual evidence provided in the maps. Additionally, the mention of the barn moving to a 'sharp junction' is a bit vague. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively, providing a clear comparison between the two time periods.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location and type of change. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'Another thing worth noticing', and 'Overall' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, separating the general overview from the specific details. The progression of ideas is clear, though some transitions between sentences could be smoother to enhance the flow. Overall, the text is easy to follow and demonstrates a good level of coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, using terms like 'substantial development', 'unaltered', 'allocated', and 'converted'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'fruits trees farm' (should be 'fruit tree area') and 'chickens farming sites' (should be 'chicken farm'). While the range is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would elevate the score to a higher band. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'that of 1950' (which is slightly awkward) and 'remained same as it was' (missing the article 'the'). The use of passive voice is generally correct, which is appropriate for this type of report. While there are some minor errors, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied complex structures and ensure articles and prepositions are used more consistently.
