Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to describe the changes between 1950 and the present day, but it fails to provide a clear overview or a structured comparison. The description is highly repetitive and lacks the analytical tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. Key features, such as the removal of the sheep area or the addition of the camping site and solar panels, are mentioned in a disjointed manner rather than being integrated into a coherent summary. The response lacks a clear introduction and a concluding summary of the main trends, which are essential for achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks logical progression. The paragraphs are poorly structured, and the flow of information is hindered by the repetitive use of phrases like 'when we look' and 'when we move'. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; instead, the text relies on simple, additive conjunctions. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial changes on the farm. The paragraphing is inconsistent and does not serve to organize the information into distinct, logical sections.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'farm', 'road', and 'trees'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'avalible' (available) and 'Seperate' (separate). The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe the features of the map, such as 'backward trees' instead of 'the area behind the trees'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the changes with any degree of precision or sophistication, which limits the ability to convey information effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in sentence structure, punctuation, and verb tense. Many sentences are run-on or fragmented, such as 'In 1950 the Beechwood Farm in which there is a highway...'. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the basic sentences often contain errors in subject-verb agreement and word order. Punctuation is largely ignored, with missing commas and incorrect capitalization, which frequently impedes the reader's understanding of the intended meaning.
