Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart below depicts layout of a farm in year 1950 which is known as Beechwood farm and the other chart is on the same farm after its redevelopment in the present year.

Overall, it is evident that redevelopment of farm had brought minor changes in the areas where nothing was built before areas of present fruit trees the left side are same.

To begin with, in year 1950 the river flowing surrounds the farm over which a road was contructed in north-east direction which streched into Track. This track makes a shape of traingle in the center of the heart of farm and was furthur extended towards the west direction. The area above the track was wholly for sheeps while the area below was dedicated to other terings. The area where track and main road meet was for fruit trees. The following was for soft vegetables and then for vegetables. On the south west direction there was a Barn just below the track and on the right side of traingular track the area was built for farmhouse and the corner was occupied by chickens.

However, after redevelopment that in the present year the farm is still surrounded by river but the tracks are replaced by roads and, also while the location of fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables in same. A small farm shop has been built in the rigert upper corner of fruit trees and the parking areas faces it which is above the roads. The traingular roads are further extended to barn while on location of Barn, a holiday cottages in built while the location of farmhouse and chickens are same. The major part of farm above the road is occupied by camping fied and other portion is for solar panel an also on the lower corner an area is present for parking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of both maps and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified key changes, such as the conversion of the barn into holiday cottages and the addition of solar panels and camping fields. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the transition from agricultural production to tourism and renewable energy. Additionally, some descriptions are slightly confusing, such as the reference to 'other terings' (likely a typo for 'tillage' or 'crops') and the vague description of the track's shape. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most striking transformation rather than just mentioning minor changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the 1950 and present-day layouts. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'after redevelopment', which help guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing the locations of features (e.g., 'the following was for soft vegetables'). Improving the use of cohesive devices to link ideas more fluidly between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the maps, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'surrounded', and 'occupied'. However, there are several spelling errors ('contructed', 'streched', 'traingle', 'rigert', 'fied') and word-choice issues ('terings', 'traingular roads'). These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accurate spelling and using more precise collocations for describing spatial changes, such as 'replaced by', 'converted into', or 'situated in the north-east corner'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to describe complex spatial relationships, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in year 1950'), incorrect verb forms ('is built' instead of 'has been built'), and punctuation issues. Some sentences are overly long and lack clarity due to poor clause management. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles when referring to specific locations. Reducing the number of errors in basic sentence construction will help ensure that your meaning is consistently clear.
