Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams compare the layout of Beechwood farm from 1950 to today.

Overall, the farm has undergone significant changes until now, shifting from agricultural settlement to tourist attraction. However, some areas remain unchanged.

In 1950, a track was located at the center, which was dividing the whole area into two segments. By today, although its locations remains same, it has been converted into road. In the past, there was a large sheep area to the north of it, which has been occupied by a camping field and a parking spot on left side and solar panels and a parking on right side.

A road that passed from north to west remain similar. Below the track, there, the left side was divided into three areas; fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables. By now, these areas have not changed, but a farm shop is constructed in a fruit trees area, adjacent to thick road. While, there was a barn, farm house and chickens area on the right side. At present, only barn has been replaced by holiday cottages, and a barn has been shifted to east of vegetables area. A river has not changed until now.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the shift from agricultural use to tourism. You provide a clear overview and compare the 1950 layout with the current one. However, the description of the changes is occasionally confusing. For example, stating that the barn has been 'shifted' to the east is slightly inaccurate, as the map shows a new structure rather than a relocation of the original. To reach a higher band, ensure that spatial descriptions are precise and that all significant changes, such as the addition of the solar panels and the specific layout of the parking areas, are described with greater clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different sections of the farm. You use some cohesive devices like 'In 1950', 'By today', and 'While'. However, the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'adjacent to thick road' and 'a road that passed from north to west remain similar'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track the specific locations being discussed. Improving the transition between sentences and ensuring consistent use of cohesive devices would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'agricultural settlement', 'tourist attraction', and 'converted'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'its locations remains same' instead of 'its location remains the same' and 'thick road' which is not a standard description for a path or road. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and precise descriptive language will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('its locations remains same'), incorrect article usage ('a parking', 'a barn has been shifted'), and tense inconsistencies. While your meaning is generally understandable, these errors are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that your verb tenses accurately reflect the timeline of the changes described.
