IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The maps represents the site plan of a farm in 1950 and the present look of the same farm today.
Overall, it can seen that albeit the farm maintained same size and river line, it had considerable introductions such as parking, camping field and solar panels.
In 1950, the farm had a major road at the top right corner, and a river running down bottom from the same top right corner and made a curve towards right. Then a track from the major road running to the central area of the farm and continued west. Between the river and the track from the major road is the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables garden. Towards the right, still between the track and river is the barn, farmhouse and chickens poultry. A large space for the sheep is at the top left corner of the plan.
Presently, the major roads and river remained in their original positions, same with the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetable garden, However, the tracks were converted to internal roads with two parking lots at the two extremes of the roads and the barn now located at the bottom of the roads. The large sheep area was now replaced with a big tree, camping fields and solar panels.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm in 1950 and the present day. You have clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the conversion of tracks to roads and the addition of solar panels and camping fields. The overview is concise and provides a good summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, the description of the barn's location change could be more specific regarding its original versus current position. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the significant developments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to detailed descriptions of the two time periods. The use of cohesive devices like 'In 1950', 'Presently', and 'However' helps guide the reader through the information. While the progression is clear, some transitions between sentences within paragraphs feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the same top right corner') is always precise would enhance the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the map features, such as 'internal roads', 'solar panels', and 'camping fields'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'chickens poultry' (which is redundant) and 'the maps represents' (subject-verb agreement error). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise descriptive language—such as 'transformed into', 'remained unchanged', or 'situated'—would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. The current range is functional but lacks the sophistication required for the highest bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The maps represents' (subject-verb agreement), 'it can seen' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'The large sheep area was now replaced' (tense inconsistency). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage when describing past versus present states and ensure subject-verb agreement is maintained. More consistent control over complex sentence structures would also be beneficial.
