Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagrams illustrate how the infrastructure layout of Beechwood Farm which shows the transformation from 1950 to today.

Overall, it is evident that the farmland has undergone radical modifications, including the addition of several infrastructures, a redevelopment of the farm estate, and the recreation of commutable paths.

The northern site was particularly a pasture for sheep, while the southern ones had separate planting fields for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables on the left. Besides, a barn, a farmhouse, and an area for chickens were situated in the southeast of the land.

At present, the track is converted to a road that makes way for vehicles to easily access the farmland, followed by the addition of parking lots and a farm shop at each end of the road. The barn is moved to the middle of the road, and the original site of the barn is used for holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the transformation well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of the track to a road, the addition of the farm shop and parking, and the repurposing of the barn and farmhouse area. However, the report is slightly incomplete as it fails to mention the significant reduction in the size of the planting fields or the complete disappearance of the sheep pasture, which are major visual changes. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview of all significant changes rather than focusing only on the additions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the past state from the present state. Cohesive devices such as 'At present' and 'followed by' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the first and second sentences in the introduction is slightly awkward due to the grammatical structure of the opening sentence. Overall, the information flows well and is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure layout,' 'radical modifications,' and 'redevelopment.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'recreation of commutable paths' (which is not quite accurate for a farm track) and 'northern site was particularly a pasture' (where 'primarily' would be more natural). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive verbs and adjectives related to geographical change would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the opening sentence: 'The diagrams illustrate how the infrastructure layout of Beechwood Farm which shows the transformation...' which is a sentence fragment. Additionally, 'the southern ones' is a slightly awkward reference to the fields. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of complex sentence constructions. The majority of the sentences are clear, but the control over grammar is not consistent enough for a higher band.
