IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given plans shows the comparison between two farms in 1950 and today.
Overall the Beechwood Farm has undergone significant development dating 1950 till now. The development includes the amusement sites and as well as parking.
Some places have not changed at all just as the fruit trees still stand at the same place from 1950. But in today's plan east to fruit trees there is a farm shop which is divided from parking by a road former known as track. The road leads all its way to barn located at the end of road which was first located at the north of the farmhouse. The barn today is replaced for tourists who come for holidays and need accommodation. In front of the farmhouse still remains a place for chickens.
The soft trees and vegetables remain located at the same exact place.
The entire space for sheep is divided into parking and for adventure lovers into camping field covered with dense mass of tall trees. The some space still left was covered by solar panels and for automobiles parking was made at the corner.
These changes indicates the development of infrastructure over the increasing year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the transformation, such as the addition of the farm shop, the conversion of the barn into holiday accommodation, and the introduction of solar panels. You also correctly noted the elements that remained unchanged, like the fruit trees and vegetable garden. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview of the most significant changes, such as the shift from a purely agricultural focus to a more commercial/tourist-oriented site. While you covered the key points, the description of the layout is occasionally confusing, particularly when describing the location of the barn and the road, which makes it difficult for the reader to visualize the changes clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the fruit trees and the farm shop feels abrupt. You use some cohesive devices like 'but' and 'in front of', but the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'the road former known as track', which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the logical progression. To improve, try using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the past and present states more fluidly, and ensure that your references to specific locations are precise and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'significant development', 'infrastructure', and 'accommodation'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'the road former known as track' (should be 'formerly known as a track') and 'the some space still left'. Additionally, 'the increasing year' is not a standard collocation for describing the passage of time in this context. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, you need to focus on using more precise terminology and improving your control over word forms to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'The given plans shows' contains a subject-verb agreement error. You also struggle with prepositions and articles, such as 'at the end of road' (missing 'the') and 'replaced for tourists' (should be 'replaced by'). While your meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these small errors prevents the writing from being considered highly accurate. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article usage, and the correct prepositional phrases for describing locations on a map.
