IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The first map below demonstrates the Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the second map shows the same site today after reconstruction.
Overall, the layout has become more modern and convenient. Several farm spaces, parking spots, solar panels etc. are built to accommodate more options in the farm today. Track is renovated to road however, spaces for road, river, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and farmhouse remained the same.
In 1950, major portion of the places was for sheep. There was a track to divide the sheep space with other places like fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and barn. Fruit trees were right beside of a road and beside that, there were soft fruits. In addition, there were vegetables space in between track and river. Moreover, there were places for chickens, a farmhouse and a barn on the south-east part of the farm.
Today, the farm has modernized a lot. Instead of keeping large space for sheep, solar panels are placed on the north-east part, parking spot is added beside the road, and in the middle, the camping space is developed with trees. The track is reconstructed to the road now which goes in the middle of the map. Between fruit trees and road, a new farm shop is developed. The barn is relocated to a new place between the space of chickens and vegetables, and a new road is developed to reach there. On the north side of farmhouse and chickens, several holiday cottages is developed and on the opposite side of the road, a new parking spot is added which is the southern part of solar panels.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all key features of the two maps. You have identified the main changes, such as the reduction in sheep farming, the introduction of solar panels, and the development of holiday cottages and a farm shop. The overview is clear and highlights the general trend of modernization. However, the description of the layout could be more precise; for example, stating that the 'track is renovated to road' is slightly inaccurate as the map shows a new road network replacing the old track. Additionally, some spatial relationships are slightly vague, such as the location of the barn. Overall, you have provided a solid summary with relevant comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Instead of'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'on the southern part of solar panels' is a bit clunky. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two time periods, which helps the reader follow the chronological changes easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'modernized', 'reconstructed', 'relocated', and 'accommodate'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'major portion of the places' (should be 'a major portion of the land') and 'vegetables space' (should be 'vegetable area'). While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, some phrasing remains slightly simplistic. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, particularly with subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'several holiday cottages is developed' (should be 'are developed') and 'in between track and river' (missing articles). Prepositional usage is also occasionally imprecise, such as 'right beside of a road'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of the map changes.
