IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map shows the layout of beechwood farm in 1950 to compare it with the current development of the farm.
Overall, the farm has undergone significant changes to make it more commercialized for the visitors.
In the past, majority of the area was allocated for cattle farm, and the south part was for the vegetables and fruits crops, with barn & farmhouse located in the south-eastern part. A walking track starting from fruit trees to barn was also created for easy navigation across the farm.
However, the current layout underwent a major redevelopment process, making it more commercialized for the people. The tracks have transformed into roads with dedicated parking areas. One is opposite to the fruit trees, facing the main road whereas the other is opposite to the holiday cottages.
The barn was relocated to south side and linked it with the road, so it can accessed easily. Whereas, holiday cottages have replaced the previous site location of the barn.
Farm shop has opened next to fruit trees. One of major transformation happened on north side of the farm, the area for the cattle farm has been repurposed and divided into two parts. For one, the area is now used for camping with fully grown trees, while the remaining part is used to install solar panels to generate electricity for the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student has effectively outlined the major changes between the farm's layout in 1950 and today, highlighting key developments. They have adequately described the transformation from a cattle farm to a more commercialized site with cottages and solar panels. However, while the response identifies some features well, it could be improved by including more data or specific comparisons for a stronger analysis of the changes. Overall, the task achievement is solid, but further detail would enhance the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The overall coherence of the writing is relatively strong, with a clear structure and logical progression from past to present. The student employs linking phrases like "In the past" and "However," to connect ideas effectively. However, some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as "The barn was relocated to south side and linked it with the road, so it can accessed easily," which could flow better. A few improvements in transitions would enhance overall cohesiveness.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The lexical resource is competent, with the student using appropriate vocabulary related to the layout and development of the farm. Phrases like "commercialized," "major redevelopment," and "dedicated parking areas" are appropriate for an academic context. However, the use of simpler terms such as "majority" and "transformed" could be replaced with more precise vocabulary to improve their lexical range and convey their ideas more accurately. Overall, it demonstrates a solid command of relevant vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
Grammatical range and accuracy are fairly strong, with varied structures, including complex sentences such as, "One of major transformation happened on north side of the farm..." while achieving generally appropriate tense usage. Nonetheless, several grammatical issues are present, such as "linked it with the road" (missing subject) and "so it can accessed easily" (missing 'be') which affect clarity. Attention to minor grammatical errors will strengthen the overall quality of the writing.
Overall feedback
This response demonstrates a clear understanding of the task and provides a decent overview of the changes on the farm site. The structure is logical, with an appropriate introduction, body, and conclusion, while the language used is generally relevant. However, to enhance your score further, focus on providing more detailed comparisons with specific references to quantifiable changes. Additionally, pay attention to grammatical accuracy and vary your vocabulary to avoid repetitions and utilize more precise terms as suggested. Improving these areas will strengthen your overall response and help achieve a higher band score.
