IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The maps illustrate the changes that have taken place at Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the farm has undergone considerable redevelopment, with several areas being converted from agricultural use into commercial, recreational and residential facilities. However, some features, including the fruit-growing areas, farmhouse and chicken area, have remained unchanged.
In 1950, the areas used for growing fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables occupied much of the site and remained in the same locations throughout the period. However, a farm shop and a car park have since been constructed nearby. The original track has also been converted into a road, while the former sheep area has been transformed into a campsite with solar panels. In addition, a second car park has been built on the opposite side of the road.
Another significant change is the replacement of the former barn with holiday cottages. These cottages are located at the end of a triangular section of the new road. By contrast, the farmhouse and chicken area have remained in their original positions. Overall, the development has resulted in a more diverse use of the farm, incorporating tourism and commercial facilities alongside the existing agricultural areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the site in 1950 and compared them to the present day. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes, such as the shift from agricultural to commercial and recreational use. You have also provided specific details, such as the conversion of the barn into holiday cottages and the addition of the road and car parks. The information is well-selected and accurately reflects the visual data provided, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', 'Another significant change', and 'By contrast' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas, ensuring the text flows smoothly. The referencing is clear throughout, and the structure of the report is logical, making it easy for the reader to follow the comparison between the two time periods.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes accurately. Terms such as 'redevelopment', 'converted', 'transformed', and 'incorporating' demonstrate a good level of precision. The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report and is used with natural control. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific synonyms could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical choices are precise and contribute to the clarity of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of passive voice ('have been constructed', 'have been converted') and subordinate clauses ('with several areas being converted...'). The grammar is accurate throughout, with no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly, and the sentence structures are varied, which helps maintain the reader's interest. The control over tense usage, particularly the present perfect to describe changes over time, is consistent and accurate.
