Student answer (Band 5.5)

The Map diagram below illustrates the changes of Beechwood Farm's site in 1950 and the current situation of the same site.

Overall, The farm has gone for upgrading phases in between these years, showing clear changes in the several specific areas of today's map from what it was back in 1950.

In 1950, the farm had a vast portion of land for sheep farming and underneath the track and on the belt of river it had segment land area for fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and significantly larger chicken farms consist of farmhouse and barn.

In today's map, we can see some of the new segmentation. The vast portion of sheep herd has now been reconstructed into camping field, two parking area and on the side of the map the solar panels been installed. On the other hand, few changes has been taken place on the (chickens, farmhouse, Barn) portion, new holiday cottages has been built on the exact location of the barn, and the barn been shifted on the intersection of the two road. In addition on the far side of the land area of fruit trees, a new farm shop has taken place. Furthermore, the track has been modified into road.

In contrast, the site has been undergone through massive development adding some of the features other than focusing solely on farming and agriculture, inclusion of camping field, solar panels, parking areas and holiday cottages demonstrates that beside farming, the site owner are focusing on generating revenue from other sources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation. You clearly contrasted the 1950 layout with the current one, noting the shift from agricultural use to tourism-related facilities like the camping field and holiday cottages. However, the report could be improved by being more precise with spatial descriptions. For example, stating 'underneath the track' is vague; using directional language like 'to the south of the track' would be more professional. Additionally, ensure you report all key changes, such as the removal of the original fruit trees and the expansion of the road network, to ensure a fully comprehensive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific details. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In contrast' and 'In addition,' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical phrasing and some awkward transitions. For instance, the phrase 'The farm has gone for upgrading phases' is slightly unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, but the use of parentheses in the fourth paragraph ('chickens, farmhouse, Barn') disrupts the flow of the text and should be avoided in formal writing. Improving the variety of linking words would help the progression feel more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconstructed,' 'segmentation,' and 'generating revenue.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'gone for upgrading phases' instead of 'undergone a series of upgrades' and 'segment land area' instead of 'a designated area.' Some phrasing is also repetitive. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid informal or awkward phrasing like 'the site owner are focusing.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the site owner are focusing'), missing articles ('on the intersection of the two road'), and incorrect verb forms ('the barn been shifted' instead of 'the barn has been shifted'). While these errors do not prevent the meaning from being understood, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on consistent tense usage and article placement will significantly improve your accuracy.
