IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given images illustrate visuals of a farm in 1950 and the same area in present time.

Overall, the farm has seen a significant number of changes which include removal of sheeps from the farm, installation of solar panels and plenty of other changes as well.

Nowadays, the fruit trees section also includes a new farm shop which was not present in 1950. However, the soft fruits and vegetables areas have remained the same. The track running through the farm is now being converted into a road. Apart from this, the barn is shifted to the right of the vegetables section, just at the end of the triangular shaped road, whereas the previously held barn area is now being replaced by holiday cottages.

Furthermore, the left side of the track was completely allocated as a sheep space in 1950. Nonetheless, a lot of new additions have been made to this place. There are two new parking spaces, one at the left side of the place where the road starts and the other is at the same side towards the end of the road opposite which has holiday cottages to the right side. A camping field as well as solar panels are also introduced in the previously known Sheep area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the changes. You covered the key transformations, such as the removal of sheep, the addition of solar panels, and the conversion of the track into a road. However, the report could be improved by grouping information more logically (e.g., separating infrastructure changes from land-use changes) rather than listing them sequentially. While you mentioned the farm shop and holiday cottages, ensure that all major spatial changes are described with precise reference to their location to help the reader visualize the site more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Nonetheless', and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. For instance, the second paragraph is quite dense compared to the third. Improving the flow between sentences by varying your linking words would enhance the overall readability. The referencing is generally clear, though some descriptions of location, such as 'the same side towards the end of the road', could be more concise to avoid confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocated', 'installation', and 'converted'. There are some minor errors in word choice and pluralization, such as 'sheeps' (the plural of sheep is sheep) and 'previously held barn area' (which is slightly unnatural). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'demolished', 'replaced by', or 'situated in the northern quadrant'. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the farm has seen a significant number of changes which include removal of sheeps' (missing articles) and 'the barn is shifted' (tense inconsistency; should be 'was shifted' or 'has been shifted'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past versus present states and pay closer attention to article usage (a/the) before nouns.
