IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given images illustrate visuals of a farm in 1950 and the same area in present time.
Overall, the farm has transitioned from a purely agricultural site into a modern eco-tourism and commercial destination.
Nowadays, the fruit trees section also includes a new farm shop which was not present in 1950. However, the soft fruits and vegetables areas have remained the same. Similarly, farmhouse and chickens area did not see any changes. The track running through the farm has been converted into a road. Apart from this, the barn was shifted to the right of the vegetables section, just at the end of sharp turn of the road, whereas the previously held barn area has been replaced by holiday cottages.
Furthermore, the left side of the track was completely allocated as a sheep space in 1950. Nonetheless, a lot of new additions have been made to this place. There are two new parking spaces, one at the left side of the place where the road starts and the other is at the same side towards the end of the road opposite which has holiday cottages to the right side. A camping field as well as solar panels are also introduced in the previously known Sheep area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the two maps, including the transition from agricultural use to eco-tourism. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the conversion of the track to a road, the addition of the farm shop, and the repurposing of the sheep area. However, the description of the barn's relocation is slightly confusing, and the report could be improved by grouping features more logically (e.g., permanent structures vs. new facilities). While you mention the farmhouse and chicken area remained unchanged, ensuring a more precise comparison of spatial relationships would elevate the response to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction and a summary of the main trends. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the general overview from specific details. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Similarly' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph—specifically 'this place' and 'the place'—is a bit vague. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to specific locations would improve the flow and coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'transitioned', 'converted', 'allocated', and 'eco-tourism'. There is an awareness of style, and the vocabulary is generally precise enough to convey the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'area' and 'side' to avoid repetition. For example, instead of 'sheep space', you could use 'grazing land' or 'pasture'. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the same area in present time' (should be 'the present time') and 'the farmhouse and chickens area' (should be 'the farmhouse and chicken area'). Additionally, 'just at the end of sharp turn' is missing an article. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional accuracy when describing locations on a map, as these are critical for clarity in Task 1 responses.
