IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given images illustrate visuals of a farm in 1950 and the same area in the present time.

Overall, the farm has transitioned from a purely agricultural site into a modern eco-tourism and commercial destination.

Nowadays, the fruit trees section also includes a new farm shop which was not present in 1950. However, the soft fruits and vegetables areas have remained the same. Similarly, the farmhouse and chickens areas did not see any changes. The track running through the farm has been converted into a road. Apart from this, the barn was shifted to the right of the vegetables section, just at the end of the sharp turn of the road, whereas the previously held barn area has been replaced by holiday cottages.

Furthermore, the left side of the track was completely allocated as a sheep space in 1950. Nonetheless, a lot of new additions have been made to this place. There are two new parking spaces, one at the left side of the place where the road starts and the other is at the same side towards the end of the road opposite which has holiday cottages to the right side. A camping field as well as solar panels were also introduced in the area previously occupied by sheep.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have successfully highlighted key changes, such as the conversion of the track into a road, the addition of the farm shop, and the repurposing of the sheep area for tourism. The overview is clear and sets the stage for the detailed body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, while you mention the barn was shifted, clarifying its original position relative to the current one would add depth. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a logical selection of information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information thematically. The use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Similarly', and 'Furthermore' helps guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different areas of the farm. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. To improve, ensure that the transition between the description of the road and the barn is slightly more fluid, as the current phrasing is a bit dense.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'transitioned', 'allocated', and 'eco-tourism'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally accurate. However, there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'previously held barn area' and 'sheep space', which sound slightly unnatural. Using more precise collocations would elevate the response. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the visual information.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar does not impede communication. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'the same side towards the end of the road opposite which has holiday cottages', which is slightly clunky. Punctuation is generally handled well. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions to describe the changes (e.g., 'The area was repurposed for...'), which would be highly appropriate for this type of task.
