IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
As of 1950 we can observe that there is way more space and there are less places to work and also the roads are little underdeveloped which can lead to mishaps but as of 1950 it was sufficient. In present times we can observe that there is less space for farm and more of like fancy farmhouse we can observe that rather than farming it has been used as camping spot also the roads are seen to be in a better condition due to which many people can go through the farm and afterwards they can do camping. From the observation we can see that during 1950 the farms were used for proper farming their main use for farming as of today it has became like a farmhouse the sense or the feeling of farming is getting vanishes. The area for sheeps we can see in 1950 is very large which is must because without sheeps farming is like opening a school where there is very low population where there are no children . In todays time that area has been turned into camping spot then where will the sheeps go? From my point of view the 1950's farm was better than todays.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of providing an objective summary of the visual data, the response is highly subjective, including personal opinions such as 'the 1950's farm was better than todays' and irrelevant analogies about schools and children. The task requires a neutral description of changes in the farm layout, but the writer focuses on interpreting the 'feeling' of the farm. Key features, such as the specific changes to the farmhouse, the removal of the sheep area, and the addition of camping facilities, are mentioned but are obscured by informal, non-academic commentary. To improve, you must remain objective and focus solely on reporting the factual changes shown in the diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear structure. It is written as a single block of text rather than using paragraphs to separate different aspects of the comparison. There is no clear introduction or overview, and the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'we can observe' and 'from the observation'. The flow of the argument is hindered by the lack of logical sequencing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two time periods. Using clear paragraphing and a wider range of linking words would significantly improve the readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic phrasing such as 'we can observe' and 'there is'. There is a lack of precise terminology required for describing maps or spatial changes (e.g., 'converted into', 'replaced by', 'expanded'). The tone is overly informal and conversational, which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. Phrases like 'fancy farmhouse' and 'the sense or the feeling of farming is getting vanishes' are imprecise and grammatically awkward. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more academic vocabulary related to describing trends and spatial transformations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('the farms were used... their main use... has became'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence construction. Punctuation is also problematic, with many run-on sentences that lack proper conjunctions or full stops. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple or poorly connected clauses. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structure, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and using punctuation to clearly separate distinct ideas.
