IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
These diagrams illustrate a map of a farm site from 1950 and the same site today. The farm is called Beechwood Farm. This farm was constructed near a river curve and a road. In 1950, the farm consisted of 5 different areas. Four of those areas were separated from the last area by a track in between. The fifth area was where the sheep were kept and it was the largest area among all. On the other side of the track, there was an area for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables. All of these three had roughly the same area. The fourth part on the other side of the track was bigger than the other three. This part had a barn, a farmhouse, and some place to keep the chickens. The farmhouse was comparatively smaller than the barn.
Today, the same Beechwood farm looks a lot different. The largest part where the sheep were kept is now turned into a camping field and a solar panel field. That area also had two parking spaces, one near the camping field and one near the solar panel field. The tracks are now converted into roads and the Barn into a series of holiday cottages. There is a barn but it is much smaller now. A farmshop is also added in the fruit trees section. No changes are made to the farmhouse, chicken area, soft fruit area and the vegetable area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the diagrams, including the major transformations such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping/solar site and the barn into holiday cottages. You successfully identify the main trends and make relevant comparisons between 1950 and the present day. However, the description is slightly repetitive in its structure (e.g., listing areas one by one). To reach a higher band, ensure you group information more analytically rather than just listing features. The overview is present but could be more concise to better highlight the most significant changes, such as the shift from agricultural to commercial/leisure use.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the 1950 layout to the present-day changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other side of the track' and 'Today, the same Beechwood farm looks a lot different,' which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking phrases to show contrast or addition would improve the overall cohesion and make the text feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'constructed,' 'converted,' and 'solar panel field.' There is an attempt to use specific terminology related to the map features. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic at times (e.g., 'some place to keep the chickens,' 'looks a lot different'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and descriptive adjectives to convey the scale and nature of the changes more effectively. Spelling is accurate throughout the response, which is a positive aspect of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Four of those areas were separated from the last area by a track in between.' Grammar is generally accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. You maintain consistent tense usage when describing the past and present. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions (e.g., 'The barn has been converted into...') or relative clauses, to demonstrate more flexibility and control over your writing.
