Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of the farm shop, camping area, and solar panels. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes. The reporting of information is occasionally imprecise, such as describing the road as 'triangle shape' rather than identifying the junction. While the key changes are identified, the lack of a formal introduction and a clear summary paragraph limits the development of the response. To improve, ensure you provide a clear overview of the overall transformation and use more precise geographical language to describe the layout changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the flow of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of varied cohesive devices. The use of 'In one Hand' and 'On the other hand' is an incorrect application of linking phrases, as these are typically used to contrast two sides of an argument rather than to describe two different time periods. Additionally, the transition between sentences is often mechanical, relying heavily on 'and' to connect clauses. Improving the use of cohesive devices like 'subsequently', 'meanwhile', or 'in contrast' would significantly enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, relying on simple descriptors like 'normal', 'huge', and 'same'. There is a lack of precise terminology for describing map changes, such as 'demolished', 'expanded', 'converted', or 'relocated'. Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'today version' or 'under the road there is a river'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more specific vocabulary related to land use and development, and focus on using words that accurately describe the spatial relationships between the features on the map.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This diagram illustrate', 'Beechwood farm have'), article usage, and tense consistency. The sentence structures are predominantly simple or compound, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with run-on sentences and missing commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and expanding your range of sentence structures by using relative clauses or passive voice, which is particularly useful for describing changes in map tasks.
