Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate the site of Beechwood farm in 1950 and now.

Overall, fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens, and farmhouse remained at the same location. Whereas Barn area is relocated between vegetables and farmhouse area connecting two roads.

New points have been built such as two parking spots, a camping field, solar panels, holiday cottages, and a farm shop in recent year.

The track is converted into road. Entering from the main road, farm shop is constructed on the left with fruit trees and parking spot is added on the right. Moving straight along the road, camping field area is located next to parking spot. A triangle road is situated which connects with barn on the right hand and holiday cottages on the third corner, which is in front of the farmhouse. In 1950, barn was placed in holiday cottages area.

Another parking spot is opposite to holiday cottages that leads toward the Solar panels area. Meanwhile, camping field and solar panel along with parking area were area for sheep in 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the transformation well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the addition of the farm shop, holiday cottages, and solar panels, while noting what remained constant. However, the overview is slightly weak; it lists features rather than synthesising the most significant trends, such as the shift from agricultural production to tourism and renewable energy. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the 'big picture' of the site's evolution rather than just listing individual items. The comparison between 1950 and the present is clear, and the report is well-focused on the provided visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised, moving from an overview to specific details. Paragraphing is used, though the transition between the general summary and the detailed description could be smoother. You use some cohesive devices like 'Meanwhile' and 'Whereas', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly mechanical sentence structures. The referencing is generally clear, though some spatial descriptions, such as 'a triangle road is situated', are a bit ambiguous. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression of ideas feels more natural would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'relocated', 'converted', and 'constructed' appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'New points have been built' (better: 'New facilities have been developed') and 'triangle road' (better: 'triangular road layout'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise geographical and descriptive terminology to describe site changes and spatial relationships.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' is often missing, e.g., 'between vegetables and farmhouse area') and verb tense consistency. For instance, 'In 1950, barn was placed' should be 'the barn was placed'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'A triangle road is situated which connects with barn'. Increasing the variety of complex structures and paying closer attention to articles and prepositions will help improve your accuracy and range.
