IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps illustrates how Beachwood farm, have developed from 1950 to the present.

Overall, the south-west part of the site remained mostly the same, whereas the north-east part changed drastically from being an inclosure for the sheep to becoming more diverse. The south-west part of the site did not change much besides some addition and change of location for specific buildings. The most striking change is the track that has been replaced with a road.

In 1950, the north-east part was completely replaced by the addition of a camping field, solar panels and two parkings, one located next to the main road while the other is next to road of the site. The south-east part didn't change as much, to this day the barn is still there but has been relocated at the cross section of the road and a new smaller building has been built for it, while the old building is being used for holiday cottages. The location of the farmhouse and the chickens did not change in the slightest. Regarding the eastern part of the site, most of it remain unchanged with the exception of the addition of farm shop in the fruit trees area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, such as the transformation of the north-east area and the relative stability of the south-west. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. However, there are some inaccuracies in your description; for instance, you mention the barn was 'relocated at the cross section', but the map shows it was converted, not moved. Additionally, describing the north-east as 'completely replaced' is slightly imprecise given the existing features. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reporting of spatial changes is strictly aligned with the visual evidence provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'whereas' and 'in addition to'. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by slightly confusing references, such as 'the old building is being used for holiday cottages' without clearly linking it back to the specific structure mentioned previously. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis, which helps the reader follow the development of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'drastically', 'striking change', and 'diverse'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'inclosure' (which should be 'enclosure') and 'two parkings' (which is non-standard; 'two parking areas' or 'car parks' would be better). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise terminology for map descriptions, such as 'converted', 'demolished', or 'extended', would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps illustrates') and awkward phrasing ('the north-east part was completely replaced by the addition of...'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction that slightly impede the flow. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
