IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two plans illustrate the changes at Beechwood Farm in 1950 and present day.
Overall, it is evident that the size of the farm site remained the same. However, most of the land that was previously occupied by sheep's was replaced by camping fields. The tracks were converted into roads while the barn reduced much in size.
Over the years, the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables remained at the same place along the river, while a farm shop was added near the fruit trees. The farmhouse and chickens also stayed, but the barn was replaced by holiday cottages. However, the barn was made more accessible by linking it with the roads.
The land used by sheep's for grazing was totally transformed by creating parking spaces for the guests along the road. A camping field was also set up in the centre surrounded by trees and solar panels installed in the upper parts of the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the transformation well. You successfully identify key changes, such as the conversion of sheep grazing land into camping fields and parking, and the addition of new facilities like the farm shop and solar panels. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons between the two time periods. For instance, while you mention the barn was replaced, quantifying the scale of change or noting the specific layout shifts would enhance the analysis. The overview is clear, but ensure that all significant changes are highlighted to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Over the years', and 'while' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. To reach a higher band, ensure that the progression of ideas is smoother; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be more seamless. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always precise to avoid any ambiguity regarding which part of the farm is being discussed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the changes, using terms like 'converted', 'transformed', and 'occupied'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and pluralization, such as 'sheep's' (the plural of sheep is simply 'sheep') and 'the barn reduced much in size' (a more natural phrasing would be 'the barn was significantly reduced in size'). These minor errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from being considered sophisticated or consistently precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The land used by sheep for grazing was totally transformed by creating parking spaces'. While most sentences are clear, there are occasional grammatical slips, such as the incorrect pluralization of 'sheep's' and some awkward phrasing in the passive voice. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and plural forms.
