Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram below illustrates the site of farm in the year 1950 and the same site today after reconstruction.

Overall, there are many modern things introduce in Beechwood Farm distinct from the past such as solar panels, holiday cottages etc.

Firstly, in the year 1950, there was a track of farm attached with road. If we follow the track on the right side of track there was an area for fruit trees and today in that area fruit trees remained however there is a new construction of farm shop besides the road that was once track. Across the farm shop on the left side of the road there is a parking now along the main road but in past the left side of track is spacious mostly used for sheep. Additionally many other things construct on left side of road such as camping fields and trees. On the northeastern side of farm solar panels are placed there to get energy from sun , on the right side besides it there is other parking.

Across the parking, holiday cottages are constructed besides it on right there is a farmhouse still remained but in past there was a barn in place of cottages. Next to farmhouse a place for chickens remain same now barn is relocated on left corner infront of farmhouse. On the left a river is situated, moving along the river, there comes a place for vegetables and then next to it is soft fruits, these both places are remained same

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the transformation well, identifying key changes such as the addition of solar panels, holiday cottages, and the farm shop. However, the description is somewhat cluttered and lacks a clear, analytical structure. While the overview is present, it is quite brief. The comparison between 1950 and the present is generally clear, but the spatial descriptions are occasionally confusing (e.g., 'across the farm shop on the left side of the road'). To reach a higher band, ensure that the most significant changes are highlighted more distinctly and that the spatial relationships are described with greater precision and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'on the right side', 'on the left side'). The transition between the description of the 1950 layout and the current layout is not always smooth, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of changes. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved by grouping related features more effectively rather than listing them sequentially. Referencing is sometimes unclear, which impacts the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There is a reliance on basic verbs like 'construct' and 'remain'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'many modern things introduce' instead of 'many modern features have been introduced'. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'track of farm attached with road'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the student would benefit from using more precise terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'converted', 'replaced', or 'situated'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb tense and passive voice construction (e.g., 'many other things construct' instead of 'have been constructed', 'farmhouse still remained' instead of 'remains'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent tense usage and improving sentence variety would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
