IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps depict the changes that have taken place at Benchwood Farm between 1950 to present day. Overall the farm had undergone significant development.
In 1950, there was a large area dedicated for sheep, but now the whole area got divided into few different small areas. The small part adjacent to the road is now developed to parking slots and next to that parking slot a ground area is there which is now became a camping field making it a great place to visit on weekends. And in the remaining half of that sheep area, solar panels are added dedicating a smaller part of that area to park vehicles.
In 1950, there was a track leading to the barn, farmhouse and the fields. Now that area is developed to proper roads.
In 1950, on the other side of the track, fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables farms were there. Though those areas are intact now, but few additions are there. For example, a farm shop is situated now along with the farm trees. Before, the barn was there quite far away from the fruit and vegetable barns now it is situated nearer to the farms. And in place of that old barn, holiday cottages have been developed.
Furthermore, while the farmhouse and chicken coop have remained in their original locations, the area surrounding them has been repurposed for tourist accommodations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, such as the conversion of the sheep area into solar panels and camping grounds, and the addition of tourist facilities. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between 1950 and the present. However, the description of the barn relocation is slightly confusing, and some details, such as the 'soft fruits' and 'vegetable farms', could have been grouped more effectively to highlight the overall trend of diversification. To reach a higher band, ensure that the most significant changes are highlighted more prominently in the overview.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction and body paragraphs that follow a thematic approach. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In 1950', 'Now', and 'Furthermore', to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the shift from discussing the sheep area to the road development could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'that area' or 'that old barn', which requires the reader to work harder to identify the specific location being described.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'repurposed', 'accommodations', and 'diversification' (implied). However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'parking slots' (parking spaces/areas) and 'ground area' (open space). The phrasing 'whole area got divided' is too informal for an academic report. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'situated in the vicinity of'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'between 1950 to present day' (should be 'between 1950 and the present day') and 'now became a camping field' (should be 'has now become'). The sentence 'Though those areas are intact now, but few additions are there' is grammatically incorrect due to the double conjunction. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant conjunctions.
