IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The two plans show the changes that took place at Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the farm has been significantly developed, particularly in the northern and eastern areas, with new facilities for tourism and commercial activities. However, the main agricultural areas have remained largely unchanged.
In 1950, the farm consisted of areas for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, while the north-east was used for sheep. There were also a barn, farmhouse and chicken area in the south-east. Several tracks provided access around the farm, and a main road ran through the north-west.
Today, the three agricultural areas remain in the same locations, but the sheep area has been replaced by a camping field and solar panels. A farm shop and parking area have been added near the fruit trees, while holiday cottages have been built in the east. The old tracks have also been replaced by roads, and the barn has been moved further south. Overall, the farm has changed from mainly agricultural use to a mixture of farming, tourism and commercial activities.
