IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the layout of a farm, called Beechwood Farm, and compare the changes between 1950 and to the present day.
Overall, it is evident that the farm has undergone sustantial redevelopment. At a glance, it can be seen that several landmarks- fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables bed, farmhouse and place for chickens remained unchanged, along with the main road running from west to north. However, extensive developments have occured in terms of infrustructures, energy production, holiday, shopping and recreational facilities. Finally, the track has been converted into road.
In 1950, the farm lacked various amenities with a large area dedicated only towards sheep. However, today that area is replaced my a camping field to the nothern side with tents for accomodation. A parking facility along the main road has also been introduced to the west of the camping arena. A considerable portion has also been dedicated for solar pannels in the north-eastern side, along with another parking lot to its south.
Another stricking change is the conversion of the old track into road and the triangular paths lead to the barn. A farm shop adjacent to the fruit trees, has been constracted and the old barn has been demolished and several holiday cottages have been added.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, including the shift from agricultural use to recreational and commercial facilities. You effectively contrasted the 1950 layout with the present day, highlighting key additions like the camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the changes. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the 'main road' remains unchanged, but the map shows the track was replaced by a road, which is a significant detail. Overall, you have covered the requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the site. The use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In 1950', and 'Another striking change' helps guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general overview from the specific details. The progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is generally accurate. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are even smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in some places.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'demolished', and 'adjacent'. However, there are several spelling errors that detract from the quality, including 'sustantial' (substantial), 'infrustructures' (infrastructure), 'occured' (occurred), 'pannels' (panels), 'stricking' (striking), and 'constracted' (constructed). While these do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on proofreading your work for common spelling mistakes will help you achieve a higher band in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'At a glance, it can be seen that...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the farm lacked various amenities with a large area dedicated only towards sheep' (should be 'to' or 'for') and 'that area is replaced my a camping field' (should be 'by'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'converted into road' (should be 'a road'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response, and the sentence structures are generally functional.
