Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans compares the beechwood farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, the farm has undergone significant redevelopment, with several facilities such as solar panels, farm shop and camping field, being added. In contrast, fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables remained unchanged.

In 1950, the western and central part of the farm were occupied by fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables sections across the river. A barn and farmhouse were located on the southeastern part of the site, with a chicken area nearby. On the opposite side of the track is one large area for sheep on the northern side.

In contrast, track is reconstructed to make a proper road. Farm shop is also introduced in the fruit trees section. Holiday cottages are also constructed in the lower section along with barn, farmhouse, chickens etc. Barn is now at the lower end of road where road is branching. On the opposite side of the road, there are two sections for parking one is near the camping field and other is at the right end of the road where solar panels are installed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm's transformation. You have provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes, such as the addition of the farm shop, camping field, and solar panels. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise spatial descriptions. For example, stating that the barn and farmhouse were 'located on the southeastern part' is good, but the description of the current layout is slightly confusing. You mention the barn is at the 'lower end of road', but the relationship between the old and new structures could be clearer. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are explicitly linked to the 1950 baseline to provide a more cohesive narrative of change.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. The use of cohesive devices like 'In contrast' and 'Overall' helps guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where 'one is near the camping field and other is at the right end' lacks a clear subject. Improving the flow between sentences by using more varied linking phrases would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'occupied', and 'reconstructed'. There are some minor issues with word choice and article usage, such as 'track is reconstructed' (should be 'the track') and 'farm shop is also introduced' (should be 'a farm shop'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more specific descriptive language regarding the layout and changes would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding articles ('the western and central part', 'the farm shop') and subject-verb agreement. For instance, 'The plans compares' should be 'The plans compare'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack necessary determiners, which affects the overall accuracy. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
