Student answer (Band 6.5)

The map diagrams illustrate a comparison of layout of a farm in 1950 and today.

Overall, the farm has undergone significant redevelopment. The place were sheep kept has been transformed into parking, camping field, and solar panels while, place for vegetables and soft fruits remained the same.

In 1950, the farm was aligned with the river, with the tracks in center of the farm. There was a wide road in the north-west side, and a large north-east portion dedicated for sheep. The fruit trees were standing close to road with one side facing a river. Notably, soft fruits and vegetables were placed adjacent to each other. The lower bottom space pointed towards east-south was designated for chickens , farmhouse and barn.

Since then, the farm has witnessed extensive renovation. The road and the areas alongside river including fruit trees, soft trees, vegetables, farmhouse, chickens remains the same. However, the track has been renovated into road, with the large spacious space for sheep has been divided into camping field, solar panels and two parking areas, one is located nearby road while the other on east side. In addition, holiday cottages has been made just below the east road. Not only the size of barn has been reduced but also it has been relocated into the junction of two roads just besides farmhouse.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, including the conversion of the sheep area into recreational and energy-generating facilities. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the changes. You have also made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurate; for instance, you mentioned that the farmhouse and chickens remained the same, but the visual data suggests the farmhouse and barn locations/configurations have changed. Overall, you have covered the requirements well and provided a clear, logical report of the spatial changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that contrast the 1950 layout with the current one. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'Since then', and 'However' to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two time periods. While the flow is generally good, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing of locations is generally clear, though some descriptions of spatial relationships could be more precise to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'transformed', 'adjacent', and 'relocated'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'lower bottom space' (which is redundant) and 'soft trees' (likely referring to fruit trees). You attempt to use descriptive language, but some phrasing is slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on more precise collocations when describing map features and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the information presented in the diagrams.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in center of the farm', 'nearby road') and subject-verb agreement ('place were sheep kept', 'holiday cottages has been made'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the large spacious space for sheep has been divided'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the main points. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for basic article usage and ensuring that plural subjects are paired with the correct verb forms.
