IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The map diagrams compare the layout of Beechwood farm in 1950 and today.
Overall, the farm has undergone significant redevelopment. The place where sheep were kept has been transformed into parking, a camping field, and a solar panels while, place for vegetables and soft fruits remained the same.
In 1950, the farm was aligned with the river, with the tracks in center of the farm. There was a wide road in the north-west side, and a large north-east portion dedicated for sheep. The fruit trees were standing close to the road with one side facing a river. Notably, soft fruits and vegetables were placed adjacent to each other. The lower bottom space pointed towards east-south was designated for chickens, farmhouse and barn.
Since then, the farm has witnessed extensive renovation. The road and the areas alongside river including fruit trees, soft trees, vegetables, farmhouse, chickens remain the same. However, the track has been renovated into the road, with the large spacious space for sheep has been divided into a camping field, a solar panels and two parking areas, one is located nearby road while the other on east side. In addition, the holiday cottages has been made just below the east road. Not only the size of a barn has been reduced but also it has been relocated into the junction of two roads just besides farmhouse.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the farm's transformation, including the conversion of the sheep area and the addition of new facilities like holiday cottages and solar panels. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in your description; for instance, you mention that the farmhouse and barn remained the same, but the visual data indicates the barn was relocated and reduced in size. Additionally, you missed mentioning the removal of the original tracks. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are precisely aligned with the provided diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1950', 'Since then', and 'In addition' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are occasional issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the areas alongside river including fruit trees, soft trees, vegetables, farmhouse, chickens remain the same', which is a bit clunky. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'transformed', 'designated', and 'relocated'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'a solar panels' (should be 'solar panels') and 'soft trees' (likely referring to 'soft fruits'). Additionally, 'lower bottom space' is redundant. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over vocabulary and article usage to reach the next band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Not only the size of a barn has been reduced but also it has been relocated'. However, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text, including article errors ('the tracks in center', 'a solar panels') and subject-verb agreement issues ('the holiday cottages has been made'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points. Focusing on proofreading for articles and pluralization will help improve your accuracy.
