Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the farm site in 1950 and the present day. You have identified key changes, such as the addition of the farm shop, solar panels, and the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field. However, the overview is slightly weak; it lists details rather than synthesizing the most significant trends, such as the shift from purely agricultural land use to a more diversified, tourism-oriented site. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most striking transformations rather than just listing features. The description of the layout is generally accurate, though some spatial relationships could be described with more precision to help the reader visualize the changes more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to a description of the past and then the present. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'on the other side', 'with this area'). There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas smoothly. For instance, the transition between the 1950 description and the present-day description could be improved with a clearer signposting phrase. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be enhanced by varying the sentence structure and using more diverse referencing to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic descriptors like 'area' and 'side' repeatedly. While you successfully use terms like 'solar panels', 'camping field', and 'holiday cottage', there is a tendency to use simple phrasing (e.g., 'makes a lot of changing'). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise collocations and varied vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'transformed', 'replaced', 'extended', or 'situated'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the word choice is often functional rather than descriptive, which limits the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the beechwood farm', 'the whole of the area of sheep') and verb tense consistency ('there is a track' instead of 'there was'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the beechwood farm site makes a lot of changing by the modern era'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the content, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Increasing the use of error-free complex sentences and focusing on subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
