Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the information about the structure of a farm now and in 1950.

Overall, it can be seen that in the farm various alteration take place in the overall site, while some buildings remained unchanged and old map.

After analysis, it can be clearly seen that in 1950, there was a large area in north-east direction which is divided into two parking places, as solar panel area at right hand side and a camping field in the north direction. whilst, the the river and road in north-west direction remained same after the reconstruction of the farm. The barn in south-east direction is replaced and connected to the road in south direction.

Moving further towards the remaining data, a farm shop is build alongside of the fruit trees in north-west direction. Whereas, the tracks in old structure are transformed into the new roads in new structure. In the place of the barn now there is a holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the farm's transformation, but the description is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, you state the barn was replaced by holiday cottages, but the diagram shows the barn was removed and the cottages were built elsewhere. Additionally, the description of the north-east area is unclear, as you mention parking and solar panels which are not clearly supported by the visual data provided. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the labels on the maps with your text to avoid factual errors. While you attempt to compare the two time periods, the lack of precision in identifying locations and changes limits the effectiveness of the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. For instance, the phrase 'in the farm various alteration take place' is grammatically disjointed, and the transition 'Moving further towards the remaining data' is unnatural in this context. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'whereas' and 'whilst', but they are sometimes applied incorrectly or lead to run-on sentences. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to specific locations would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally limited and repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'structure', 'area', and 'place'. There are also issues with word formation and collocation, such as 'is build' (should be 'was built') and 'in the farm' (should be 'on the farm'). While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the lack of precision in your vocabulary makes it difficult to convey the specific changes clearly. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise verbs for describing changes, such as 'converted', 'demolished', 'expanded', or 'relocated', and ensure you use the correct parts of speech.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('alteration take place'), article usage ('the the river'), and tense consistency (mixing present and past tense when describing the 1950 map). Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at complex sentences often contain errors, such as 'the barn in south-east direction is replaced and connected to the road'. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that verbs match their subjects and that you maintain a consistent tense when describing historical data.
