Student answer (Band 5.0)

The plans below illustrates the view of a farm in 1950 and also show the current site today.

Overall, In 1950 there are a large number of place in which people grew fruit trees and soft fruits and also a vegetables and other farms and shops.

But in current site we noticed the area look more congested as compared to 1950.

In 1950 there is a lot of space for sheep and and also there is no proper road for transport. Moreover, It seems like low population because there is such a small number of vegetables and farmhouse are available.

Therefore, in current site we noticed that there is a lot of things which appear in the same place like in 1950 where the large space is available for sheep but now this place this filled with parking and camping field and also a solar panels. And also in past there is a track for walk but now it repaired and it make from track to road for heavy transport. And also build a holiday cottages near the farmhouse. We noticed that today's site seems narrow and congested.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes between 1950 and the present day. However, it fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends, instead focusing on subjective descriptions like 'congested' and 'narrow'. While some features are mentioned, such as the sheep area, solar panels, and the road, the report lacks precision and fails to accurately describe the spatial layout or the specific nature of the changes. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the lack of a clear summary of the most significant changes prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'And also' and 'In 1950'. The transition between ideas is frequently abrupt, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two time periods. The overall structure lacks the sophistication required for higher bands, as the ideas are not linked in a fluid or logical manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'things', 'place', and 'area', which do not demonstrate the range needed for an Academic Task 1. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'it repaired and it make from track to road' and 'a vegetables'. The lack of precise terminology to describe map changes (e.g., 'converted', 'replaced', 'expanded', 'developed') significantly limits the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('The plans below illustrates', 'there is a lot of things'), article usage, and tense consistency. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with few attempts at complex sentences. When complex structures are attempted, they are often faulty, such as 'it repaired and it make from track to road'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization.
