IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The two plans illustrate how Beech wood Farm has changed from 1950 to the present day.
Overall, the farm has undergone considerable development, with agricultural land being partly retained but several new facilities, roads and recreational areas being introduced. The most notable changes are the addition of a farm shop, camping field, holiday cottages, solar panels and parking areas.
In 1950, the western part of the farm consisted mainly of fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, while the northern and eastern sections were used as a sheep pasture. A network of tracks connected these areas to a barn and farmhouse in the southeast. Chickens were also kept close to the farmhouse. The River formed much of the southern and western boundary.
Today, the fruit trees, soft-fruit area and vegetable fields remain largely unchanged. However, the former sheep pasture has been substantially redeveloped. A camping field has been established in the north, alongside a farm shop and parking area. In addition, the farm now has solar panels and another parking area in the northeast.
The transport system has also been upgraded, with the former tracks replaced or expanded into roads. The original barn has been relocated further south, while holiday cottages have been built beside the farmhouse. The chicken area and the River remain in approximately the same locations.
