Student answer (Band 6.5)

The layouts illustrate the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, the plan has been transformed significantly. Although some structures remained unchanged, others have been demolished, and some new features have been introduced. Additionally, The track has been transformed into a road.

In 1950, the northern region which was largely occupied sheep, while the southeastern region along the track was a barn, and chickens on the lower side near the river. The farm house was located between the barn and chickens. On the left side was an area for vegetables, soft fruits and fruit trees were at the far end.

Currently, the area for soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and farm house remained unchanged. A farm shop has been constructed near the fruit trees. The region where barn was situated is now for holiday cottages and the barn has been relocated.

Furthermore, the track has been transformed to a road. Just above the road, two parking sections were introduced, One is opposite the holiday cottages and another is near the farm shop. A camping field is at the central area and solar panels is located at the north eastern part.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main features of the farm in 1950 and compared them with the current layout. The overview is clear and highlights the significant transformation of the site. You have effectively noted both the permanent features and the new additions, such as the holiday cottages and the camping field. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are precise; for example, stating the northern region was 'occupied sheep' is grammatically incomplete and slightly vague. Overall, the report is well-structured and provides a clear summary of the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological and thematic progression. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In 1950', and 'Currently' to guide the reader through the changes. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, 'the region where barn was situated' lacks an article, and the transition between the description of the farm house and the new features could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the past and present states, which helps the reader follow the comparison effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished', 'relocated', and 'transformed' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'occupied sheep' (should be 'occupied by sheep') and 'the region where barn was situated' (missing 'the'). While you successfully describe the layout, the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To improve, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language for spatial relationships, such as 'situated in the northern quadrant' or 'adjacent to the main road', to enhance the sophistication of your report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'solar panels is located' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'the northern region which was largely occupied sheep' (missing preposition). Punctuation is generally fine, though there is an unnecessary capital letter in 'Additionally, The track'. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
