IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The layouts illustrate the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Overall, the plan has been transformed significantly. Although some structures remained unchanged, others have been demolished, and some new features have been introduced. Additionally, the track has been transformed into a road.
In 1950, the northern region which was largely occupied by sheep, while the southeastern region along the track was a barn, and chickens on the lower side near the river. The farmhouse was located between the barn and chickens. On the left side was an area for vegetables, soft fruits and fruit trees were at the far end.
Currently, the area for soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and farmhouse remained unchanged. A farm shop has been constructed near the fruit trees. The region where barn was situated is now for holiday cottages and the barn has been relocated.
Furthermore, the track has been transformed to a road. Just above the road, two parking sections were introduced, one is opposite the holiday cottages and another is near the farm shop. A camping field is at the central area and solar panels at the north eastern part.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the farm site in 1950 and the present day. You have successfully identified the key changes, such as the conversion of the track to a road and the addition of new facilities like the farm shop and solar panels. However, the description of the 1950 layout is slightly confusing; for instance, stating the northern region was 'occupied by sheep' is a bit vague, and the sentence structure in the third paragraph is grammatically incomplete, which hinders the clarity of the comparison. To improve, ensure you clearly contrast the locations of features between the two time periods with more precise spatial language.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Although', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression within the third paragraph is somewhat disjointed due to grammatical errors, and the referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'the region where barn was situated'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the flow between sentences could be smoother if you used a wider variety of linking words to show contrast more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished', 'relocated', and 'transformed'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the northern region which was largely occupied by sheep' (which is grammatically awkward) and 'the region where barn was situated' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. Incorporating more specific descriptive language regarding spatial relationships would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that affect clarity. For example, 'the northern region which was largely occupied by sheep' is a fragment, and 'the region where barn was situated' lacks an article. Additionally, 'solar panels at the north eastern part' is missing a verb. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a main verb.
