IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The plans illustrate how a farm site changed between 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the farm has undergone considerable development, with several agricultural features being removed or replaced by modern facilities. The most noticeable changes are the construction of a new road, the expansion of the farmhouse, and the addition of buildings for visitors.
In 1950, the farmhouse was located in the centre of the site, with a garden immediately to its east. There was also a farmyard to the west of the farmhouse. A large field occupied the northern part of the farm, while another field was situated in the south. A road ran along the western side of the site.
Today, the original farmhouse has been enlarged, and the garden has been replaced by a car park. The farmyard has also disappeared and has been replaced by a number of buildings. In addition, the road has been extended into the farm, providing access to the new facilities.
The fields have been significantly reduced in size. Part of the northern field has been used for new buildings, while the southern field has been divided into smaller areas. Overall, the site has changed from a mainly agricultural area into a more developed and visitor-friendly location.
