IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The schematic diagram illustrates the transformation in layout of the farm from 1950 to today.
Overall, it is evident that farm land went through multiple modifications including, addition of several infrastructures, redevelopment of farm estate and recreation of commutable paths.
looking in detail, In 1950, at the left side of farm there is a straight road which is intersected by the river at upper left and by track at the middle. the track went straight and lead to the right side of farm after triangular turn.on the upper left side of track there are 3 areas designated to fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables while, on the lower left, 3 areas vertical to each other are designated to chicken, farmhouse and barn.however on the right side of track large area is designated for sheeps.
At present, the track is converted to a road that makes way for vehicles to easily access the farmland, followed by the addition of parking lots and a farm shop at each end of the road. The barn is moved to the middle of the road, and the original site of the barn is used for holiday cottages. Furthermore, a camping field and solar panels have been newly added at the expense of the sheep grazing zone. Meanwhile, the farmhouse and chicken area remain unchanged

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers the main features of the farm's transformation. You successfully identified key changes such as the conversion of the track to a road, the addition of new facilities like the shop and solar panels, and the repurposing of land. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the overall trends. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for example, you mention the barn was moved, but the visual evidence shows a new barn structure. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses all parts of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, moving from a general overview to a detailed description of the past and then the present. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. You use some cohesive devices like 'Meanwhile' and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical phrasing and some punctuation errors, such as the lack of capitalization at the start of sentences (e.g., 'looking in detail', 'the track went'). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent punctuation would enhance the clarity and flow of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'schematic diagram', 'transformation', 'redevelopment', and 'designated'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'recreation of commutable paths' and 'sheeps' (which is an incorrect plural). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring pluralization rules are followed correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in punctuation and capitalization, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters and missing spaces after commas. There are also some tense inconsistencies, such as 'there is a straight road' when describing the 1950 map. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence boundaries will significantly improve your score.
