Student answer (Band 5.0)

The plans illustrate the site of a beechwood farm in 1950 and the same site now.

Overall, it can be seen that the Beechwood farm in 1950 is different as now. More spaces are occupied in today farm as compare to 1950 beechwood farm. In contract, there is more improvement in today farm where all space are completely occupied from different fields.

In 1950 Beechwood farm is less developed. Where more fields are taking place by sheep farm and secondly, other fields took place in different way. However, there are less farm field developed as compared to today farm. In today farm there are slight changes as comparing to in 1950 farm. Like solar panels, parking and camping field are replace instead of sheep farm. With farm shop there is an attach of fruit trees. there is a replacement in now farm holiday cottages instead of barn.

There are changes that occur in today and in 1950 Beechwood farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes between the two maps, but it fails to clearly identify and report the main features. The description is vague, often using imprecise language like 'other fields took place in different way' rather than specifying the actual layout or changes. While the prompt asks for a summary of the site, the response lacks a clear overview of the transformation from a working farm to a more diversified site. The comparison is underdeveloped, and the information provided is often confusing or inaccurate regarding the specific features shown in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or incorrect, such as 'In contract' (likely meant 'In contrast') and 'In today farm'. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the 1950 and current layouts. The concluding sentence is redundant and does not effectively summarize the information presented. Overall, the flow of information is disjointed, and the relationships between the ideas are not clearly established.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'farm', 'fields', and 'today'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'there is an attach of fruit trees' and 'are replace instead of'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe the features of the maps (e.g., 'holiday cottages' is used, but the overall description of the site's evolution is hampered by a lack of descriptive range). The errors in word formation and usage occasionally impede the clarity of the message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are often grammatically incorrect. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement ('there is an attach'), article usage, and prepositional phrases ('as compare to', 'in today farm'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper structure. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of grammatical errors and the lack of structural variety significantly limit the quality of the writing.
