Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates the development that took place in the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, the layout underwent substantial transformation with the several new facilities replacing older structure and the new one.

In 1950, on the northern side of the map three different blocks such as fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables were placed. While in the center of the layout there was a track. On the right side of the track, there was a sheep area. In the eastern side of the map, a barn, farmhouse and chicken areas were located. Additionally, there was a river on the boundary of the park.

Today the farm has undergone numerous changes. In the northern side of the map, there is a farm shop added in the fruit trees block. While soft fruits and vegetables remain constant. In the center side of the layout track shifted into road. On the right side of the road, some developments in the sheep area. Both corners of the sheep area parking has constructed. Camping field and solar panels are new features. Furthermore in the southern side of the map, holiday cottages are the new change. While farmhouse and chickens remain unchanged. Additionally, the river is still the same on the boundary of the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the maps, including the changes in land use and the addition of new facilities. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the shift from agricultural focus to a mix of tourism and farming. However, the description of the 1950 layout is slightly cluttered, and some comparisons could be more explicit. For instance, while you mention the 'farm shop' and 'holiday cottages', you could have more clearly contrasted the reduction in purely agricultural space with the expansion of commercial/tourist facilities to better highlight the overall transformation. The overview is present but could be more detailed regarding the nature of the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'While', but the flow is occasionally mechanical. Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, such as the jump between describing the sheep area and the river. Referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'the same site today' in the introduction, is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between the description of different areas would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantial transformation', 'layout', and 'boundary'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'track shifted into road' (should be 'was replaced by a road') and 'parking has constructed' (passive voice is required: 'parking has been constructed'). Some phrasing is also slightly unnatural, such as 'the center side of the layout'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise verbs and nouns related to map descriptions, such as 'converted', 'demolished', or 'extended'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity. For example, 'the layout underwent substantial transformation with the several new facilities replacing older structure' contains a missing article and a singular/plural mismatch. There are also issues with passive voice construction, such as 'parking has constructed' instead of 'parking has been constructed'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of the passive voice when describing changes to a site.
