Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates the development that took place on the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, the layout underwent substantial transformation with several new facilities replacing older structures and the new one.

In 1950, on the northern side of the map three different blocks such as fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables were placed. While in the center of the layout there was a track. On the right side of the track, there was a sheep area. In the eastern side of the map, a barn, farmhouse and chicken areas were located. Additionally, there was a river on the boundary of the park.

Today the farm has undergone numerous changes. In the northern side of the map, there is a farm shop added in the fruit trees block. While soft fruits and vegetables remain constant. In the center side of the layout track shifted into road. On the right side of the road, some developments in the sheep area. Both corners of the sheep area parking has constructed. Camping field and solar panels are new features. Furthermore in the southern side of the map, holiday cottages are the new change. While farmhouse and chickens remain unchanged. Additionally, the river is still the same on the boundary of the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the farm site in 1950 and today. You have clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the addition of the farm shop, camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages. The overview provides a good summary of the transformation. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more explicit; for instance, instead of just stating that the farmhouse remains unchanged, you could contrast this with the significant additions elsewhere. The description of the layout is generally accurate, though some spatial references are slightly imprecise, such as describing the river as being on the 'boundary of the park' rather than the farm.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the 1950 layout from the current one. Paragraphing is used effectively to manage the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'While', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother, particularly when describing the spatial relationships of the farm features. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences could be better connected to avoid a list-like feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantial transformation', 'facilities', and 'remain constant'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the new one' in the introduction, which is vague, and 'track shifted into road', which lacks precision. You attempt to use descriptive language, but the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise vocabulary related to maps and spatial changes, such as 'converted into', 'replaced by', or 'situated in the vicinity of'. The spelling is accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'parking has constructed' (should be passive: 'parking has been constructed') and 'In the center side of the layout track shifted' (missing articles). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'three different blocks such as fruit trees... were placed'. To improve, focus on consistent use of passive voice for describing site changes and ensure articles (a/the) are used correctly. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the sentence variety is sufficient for a 6.0 band.
