IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given plans depict information about amendments in map of a beechwood farm during 1950 and today.

Overall, the farm went through a number of changes from 1950 to today. In the given site. sheep farm is modified into camping area, parking and solar panels locality. Whereas, the track is transformed into the road with an addition of grocery amenities and other domestic buildings.

Site one plan has limited facilities. Firstly, there was a sheep farm on the right corner of the map, which is adjacent to the walking track. Across the rectangular pedestrian track, in the right down corner we had barn, a farm house and chickens while, opposite side of the track is facilitated with fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables.

In comparison, the site two is today's restructured  plan with additional complexes. The sheep locality is transformed into different blocks as solar panels and camping field with additional parking on both corners of the sheep. What comes next, is the addition of farm shop close to the fruit trees, right opposite to the road. Barn is converted into the holiday cottages whereas, old barn is shifted close to the corner of the triangular road and walking track is converted into the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the maps, including the transformation of the sheep farm into a camping/solar area and the conversion of the track into a road. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the 1950 and current layouts. However, the description of the locations is occasionally imprecise, such as 'right down corner' or 'right opposite to the road,' which makes it slightly difficult for the reader to visualize the exact changes. To improve, ensure you use more precise directional language and ensure all labels from the map are clearly referenced to support your summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In comparison' and 'Whereas,' to link ideas. However, the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions, such as 'What comes next, is the addition of...' which feels unnatural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods, but the internal cohesion within the second body paragraph could be improved by using more varied linking words to connect the various structural changes more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'restructured,' 'amenities,' and 'transformed.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'sheep farm is modified into... solar panels locality' and 'grocery amenities.' The word 'locality' is not the best fit here, and 'grocery amenities' is not standard terminology for a farm shop. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'converted into,' 'replaced by,' or 'expanded.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the map,' 'the road') and prepositions ('in the right down corner'). Some sentences are slightly ungrammatical, such as 'the site two is today's restructured plan' (should be 'the second site' or 'the current plan'). There are also issues with punctuation and word order. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent article usage.
